PNBHS 1st XI vs Wellington College – 2 Day Traditional

PNBHS 1st XI vs Wellington College – 2 Day Traditional – 17/02/19 - Day 1

Captain, Jack Wenham won the toss and elected to bat first on a promising-looking Wellington College pitch. The openers started cautiously and looked secure, until the first wicket fell in the 7th over with the score on 11. This was followed by another 3 wickets by the 17th over. Fortunately, the 5th wicket partnership added some steel to the inning and allowed the team to progress to 147 all out in the 48th over. Once again, it was a case of batsmen getting themselves out, rather than the result of unplayable deliveries. Jonty Fleck scored 20, Regan Fleming 29 and Henry Deans 29.

The PNBHS opening bowlers were threatening and took 2 early wickets, followed by a run out to have the opposition on 36 for 3 in the 15th over. Unfortunately, the accuracy of bowling and fielding declined after that, allowing the Wellington batsmen to get free runs and take the initiative away from Boys’ High. This resulted in their lower-middle order being able to attack and by the time they declared 9 down, they had scored 253, a lead of 106. Jack Wenham took 2 for 61, Angus Lyver 2 for 42 and Thomas Kirk 4 for 56.

Facing the prospect of batting for 35 minutes with a large deficit, the PNBHS openers tried to dig in for the long haul. They largely achieved this to end the day on 15 for 1, needing to bat time on day 2.

Day 2 of this fixture started with PNBHS needing to knock off a 106 run 1st innings deficit before trying to set a target. After a promising start, the top and middle order once again self-destructed to leave the lower-middle to rebuild and set it up for the tail enders. The batsmen from number 5 down showed some steel and were able to give the team a faint glimmer of hope. Setting up a score of 204 all out and a lead of 98 runs. Jaiden Meyer scored 21, Curtis Heaphy 24, Henry Deans 26 and Hugo Wakeling 61.

Defending 98 on a good wicket was always going to be a difficult task but the 1st XI stuck to their task and made Wellington work for their runs. Angus Lyver was particularly effective in his first time with the new ball, taking 1 for 16 from 7 overs. The team also effected a run out but the opposition passed the score in the 27th over to win by 8 wickets.
