2nd XV v Tauranga Boys' College Match Report - Saturday 29 June
The 2nd XV travelled to Tauranga Boys' College to play the fifth round of the Super 8 competition. They were keen to keep their good run going and travelled full of confidence. A fast start saw them deep in the Tauranga 22 and a dart and offload from Carson Hepi saw Tom Beard score under the sticks for an early lead. Some uncharacteristically sloppy defence allowed Tauranga to respond and level the scores before again some good attack created space and a wide ball from Carson Hepi was easily finished by James Cameron. Again, a lack of urgency and missed tackles allowed Tauranga to respond with two well-taken tries to lead 19-12 at the interval.
The half-time chat focused on making some adjustments at breakdown time and ensuring we could deliver quick ruck ball. The second half started with PNBHS securing more ball and a switch play saw Tom Beard break a tackle and go 30m for his second try. PNBHS were much more aggressive on defence and were starting to disrupt Tauranga and from a turnover, Jared Sellwood broke a tackle and scampered over. Tauranga responded and attacked with gusto. Some superb defence held them at bay before PNBHS managed to break out and apply pressure at the other end.
An overthrown lineout was seized on by Jared Sellwood again who dotted down for his second and the teams fifth. Final score 29-19 to PNBHS 2nd XV.
