Tēnā koutou,

Re: Character Education – Service Activities

Encouraging young men to provide service to others through school and community-based activities is a core component of our Character Education programme as well as the Barrowclough Certificate for junior students and Barrowclough Award for senior students.

To assist with this, we are encouraging you to sign up for the SVA (Student Volunteer Army) Service Award.  The SVA Service Award provides an avenue for you to record the service activities you are involved in as well as recognition of this service.  After five hours you will qualify for a Member Pin, a Bronze Award Pin after 32 hours, a Silver Award Pin after 250 hours and a Gold Award Pin after 500 hours.

You are required to go to the SVA website and register to create your own personal account (ctrl + click or copy and paste into your web browser): https://service.sva.org.nz/  Once you have created your account you can begin recording the service activities you have been involved in.

From the SVA website:  “If you’re doing something to help other people and you’re not doing it to make money then that’s volunteering.  Whether you’re putting out cones at sports events, organizing the school ball, caring for a sick whanau member, washing dogs at the SPCA, planting trees or picking up plastic at the beach you’re making a contribution to your community and that counts.”

Although they will not be able to be worn as part of the school uniform, SVA Service Award pins will be presented at assembly to young men who have earned them and we are looking forward to making the first presentations in the coming weeks.

Should you have any questions about the SVA Service Award programme please come and see me.

Ngā mihi | Kind regards,
