Last Monday night, on the 21 October, several of our boys attended a speech competition held by PNRSA at the Youth Space in the City Library. Students had been required to write a speech that answered the question, ‘What does Armistice Day and Anzac Day mean to you?’ The competition was well attended, with students from Freyberg, PNGHS and Queen Elizabeth College, as well as Boys’ High. Students spoke on a diverse range of topics such as the Maori Battalion, the presence of Indian troops at Gallipoli, as well as conscientious objectors and the servicemen who returned home, shell shocked and traumatised. Our boys were very successful on the night, winning !st, 2nd and 3rd place. Jacob Waugh came first, and he will be given the opportunity to present his speech on the 11 November at the Square at the Armistice Day Celebrations. Andrew Karatea came second and he will present his speech at the Anzac Day Dawn Service next year. And finally, John Hopcroft came third and he will present his speech at the Anzac day Civil Service. The boys also won monetary prizes, and the History Department will receive a cheque for $1,200.
