3RD XI CRICKET

The 3rd XI played Marist on Saturday and was the first opportunity to play on grass. After losing the toss and being put into the field, a tidy start was made. The wickets were being chipped away but a few catches were put down. 76-3 at drinks. Catches began to be held and 3 wickets to Fred McVerry was keeping the run rate around 4 and over. But a final launch got Marist to 191-7 off 40 overs. Fred McVerry 3-31 and George Simpson 2-25. This was going to be a difficult chase but Alex Hazelton and Thomas Fowell started with positive intent. 27-1 off 6 overs became 38-4 off 11. An 80 run partnership from Jett Donald-Charnley and Jack Gordon filled the 3rds with belief. Alec Strydom had a nice little cameo of 19 off 18 and the run chase was looking under control. Another 30 added by Jett and Mr Vindriis then 169-5 became 169-7 with 4 overs to go. Fred McVerry and Jacob Duker took it to the last over with the scores tied with 2 balls to go. A big lbw shout was turned down but it was a dot ball. Last ball Jacob got bat to ball but with the field in close it was fielded and thrown to the keeper, a despairing dive from Fred and he was safe. Cheers erupted from the side lines, but one last throw was sent to the bowlers end and despite a dive the direct hit left Jacob short. A tied game 191-9 off 40 overs. Jett Donald-Charnley 58, Jack Gordon 32.
