3rd XI Cricket v United - Saturday 23 November 2019

The 3rd XI played United on Manawaroa Park on a beautiful Palmerston North day. United won the toss and elected to bat which forced the 3rds out to field in the scorching heat. The openers started swinging but were quickly halted by a caught and bowled by Fred McVerry, who also picked up the next wicket as the opener holed out to cow corner. Mr Braddock walked out to bat and demonstrated to the boys how to bat time with stoic defence. United battled through to 64-2 at drinks. Kalani Rhodes struck with 2 wickets immediately after drinks. United battled on but with wickets in hand were able to launch on anything loose and make their way to 187-8 off 40 overs. Alex Hazelton 3-34, Kalani Rhodes 2-25 and Fred McVerry 2-36.
The blue print had been set and after a few weeks of struggling to bat even 30 overs the talk was about batting time. Both openers were gone inside 7 overs, 29-2. Jack Gordon and Thomas Fowell dug deep, defended and occupied the crease and were 58-2 at drinks. Jack finally fell with the score at 89 in the 26th over, but the platform had been set to launch. Kalani and Cooper Ryder added a quick 30 and belief was building on the side lines. Michael Watkins and Mr Vindriis added 30 off 3 overs then Mr Vindriis mistimed one to square leg needing 12 off 8 balls. The last over came around with Fred McVerry and Michael needing 11 off the last over. Some 2s and a 3 were run and the scores were level with 1 ball to go. Fred calmly hit the last ball over mid off to race away for a boundary. 191-7 off 40 overs. A win by 3 wickets and a great team performance all around.
