Cricket Report – PNBHS 1st XI vs Old Boys CC – 18/01/20 – Day 1 of 2:

Bowling first, the 2020 edition of the 1st XI started well, with Thomas Kirk blasting out the first 3 batsmen to have the opposition on 32 for 3 in the 11th over. The pressure was kept up and with support from the field, 3 more wickets fell before lunch, leaving Old Boys on 72 for 6. Their middle and lower order put up more staunch resistance and Boys’ High struggled to winkle them out. It took another 38 overs to wrap up the innings at 196 all out. Regan Fleming took 2 for 5, Jonty Fleck 3 for 38 and Thomas Kirk 3 for 52.
The PNBHS innings started solidly, with the opening partnership lasting until the 10th over. This was followed by a 60-run 2nd wicket stand and 38 runs for the 4th with the 4th wicket falling in the last over of the day. The 1st XI ended the day on 120 for 4. Lachie Bradford made 40 and Jaiden Meyer 44 to set up the game nicely for the resumption on Saturday 25 January.

Day 2 resumed with PNBHS requiring another 77 runs for a first innings lead and the batsmen facing a rampant returning CD bowler. The 1st XI set about their task resolutely, however, and with some lusty hitting from Logan Love, were able to reach 206 for 9 at the end of the 60th over, before declaring with a 10-run lead. Love scored 52 with 8 fours and 2 sixes.

At the start of the Old Boys’ second innings, Thomas Kirk once again made immediate inroads, blasting the first 2 batsmen out. The opposition’s middle order was particularly aggressive, attempting to set a target. This led to plenty of chances, which the Boys’ High bowlers took and shared the wickets around. Old Boys declared at 199 for 9, setting PNBHS 190 in 35 overs for the outright win. Kirk took 2 for 48 and Josh Campbell 2 for 2.

A wicket in the second over of the chase was not the ideal start, but the 1st XI batsmen consolidated and batted responsibly. They defended the wicket-taking deliveries and cashed in on the loose balls to advance to 150 for 4 at the close of play. Logan Love made 29, debutant Joel Clark 40 and Curtis Heaphy 60 not out.

A creditable draw then, with PNBHS taking first innings points as well as near-maximum batting and bowling bonus points.
