PNBHS 1st XI VS Napier Boys’ High School – Challenge Shield – 3 Day Match

Day 2

As day 2 started, the PNBHS players were keen to knock the remaining Napier batsmen over and get into the shade. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as snicks through the slips, inside edges past the stumps and half-chances in the field served up a frustrating first hour for the field. It wasn’t until the introduction of Jonty Fleck who, in the midst of a remarkable spell of 10 maiden overs in a row, managed to snare a wicket. The rest of the tail was soon cleaned up with the return of the quicks, leaving Napier on 114 all out. Jett Donald-Charnley took 2 for 9, Angus Lyver 3 for 25 and Jonty Fleck 3 for 5.

After a tricky period of 2 overs before lunch, the PNBHS innings meandered along slowly as the openers resisted sustained, accurate bowling. Despite an early wicket, the top order managed to blunt the attack and a 103-run partnership between Lachie Bradford and Curtis Heaphy set the innings up nicely, allowing Heaphy and Logan Love to accelerate the scoring in the last session. A flurry of wickets at the end of the day was not ideal, but the game is well set up with PNBHS on 207 for 6 – a lead of 218, with an intriguing 3 sessions left to play. Love scored a brisk 25, Bradford a patient 52 and Heaphy a classy 78.

Play starts at 10:00 AM on Wednesday 5 February.
