PNBHS 2nd XV v St Bernard's College 1st XV - Saturday 13 June
The 2nd XV wider squad travelled to Wellington for their first pre-season fixture vs St Bernard's 1st XV, played over three 30 minute thirds. A frantic opening saw PNBHS score first after a darting run from Jakob Rauhihi-Collis before St Bernard's replied with a try of their own. An end to end period then ensued with both teams willing but both making errors. However, PNBHS regained the lead after a series of phases saw Javahn Stevenson crash over.
The second third saw an influx of changes for the PNBHS side and this disrupted rhythm. St Bernard's seized the initiative and began to dominate the contact area. This allowed them to get front foot ball and a flow of points followed, managing to score three tries for a 24-14 lead.
In the final third, PNBHS responded and began to impose themselves and get into their structure. After a series of good phases, the ball was shifted to the edge and Regan Fleming scored in the corner to reduce the deficit. More good play created space and from a chip kick, the ball was shifted infield and Devon Chapman scored to put PNBHS in front 26-24.
Unfortunately, a defensive error allowed St Bernard's the final say as they ran out winners 31-26. This was a really good hit out for the 2nd XV to get their season started but there is now much work ahead as they prepare for the Super Eight season.
Scorers: Tries - Jakob Rauhihi-Collis, Javahn Stevenson, Devon Chapman and Regan Fleming. Conversions - Wade McNabb (2) and Jakob Rauhihi-Collis.
