CRICKET REPORT: PNBHS 1ST XI VS Manawatu/Emerging Players XI – 25/10/20
On Sunday the 1st XI played a 50 over game against a strong Manawatu Men's’/Emerging Players selection. PNBHS was asked to bowl first on a grassy, but dry-looking pitch. The opening bowlers started well, being miserly, and an early wicket was backed up by a good fielding effort. The change bowlers continued the accuracy and successive batsmen were kept in check until the final 10 overs. As the Manawatu selection tried to accelerate, the wickets fell and the bowlers cashed in, assisted by 2 runouts. They ended their innings on 195 all out in the 50th over. Thomas Kirk took 2 for 40 and Jett Donald-Charnley 3 for 52.
The PNBHS batting effort started slowly, with the batsmen struggling to come to terms with the accurate bowling and slowing pitch. The top order then gave their wickets away cheaply, just when they had played themselves in. At 59 for 5 after 22 overs, the situation was looking dire. A 50-run partnership between Bayley Latter and Jonty Fleck went some way to rescuing the innings. However, the loss of momentum told in the end as the 1st XI withered under an experienced attack and limped to 151 for 8 from their 50 overs to lose by 44 runs. Bayley Latter scored 36 and Jonty Fleck 45 not out.
Overall, it was a good effort against a very experienced side and should hold the team in good stead for the forthcoming games.
