On Thursday, 17 June, the 1st XI travelled to Whanganui to play Whanganui High School as part of the Intercity Secondary School Competition. Due to a recent hectic playing schedule for senior team members, some were rested for this match. Resting these players allowed four PNBHS Colts players to run on for the 1st XI Hockey Team.
Will Roberts opened the scoring in the first quarter before converting another goal from a penalty corner variation shortly after. PNBHS struggled a bit with their structure, given the addition of new players. Still, they eventually began to gel in the second quarter.
Perry Smith and Tom Bayley found the net in the second quarter, and Will Roberts scored his hattrick goal. At 5 – 0 at half-time, the play opened up in the second half of the match.
The third quarter saw goals from Nicholas Zhou and Blake Rhodes-Robinson. PNBHS rounded out a 10 – 0 win with goals in the final quarter from Riley Theobald, Will Roberts (his fourth!), and Perry Smith.
Although Whanganui High School were a young team, they never gave up throughout the match.
