Deakin and Leon Payne represented the Palmerston North Judo Club at the Auckland International Judo tournament during the school holidays and achieved some impressive results. Deakin won Gold in the 50kg Cadet Men division and Silver in the 60kg Junior Men division, while Leon won Silver in the 36kg Senior Boys division.
