Over
the last four days of holidays, 11 swimmers competed in the New Zealand
Secondary School Swimming Championships in Albany.
Alex Odom had an outstanding meet. He won Gold medals in the 15 year old 50m,
100m and 200m Backstroke, and the 50m and 100m Butterfly. He won Silver in the
100m and 200m Individual Medley events and a Bronze in the 100m Freestyle. On
the way to winning his medals Alex broke the school records for 15 year olds in
the 50m Backstroke, and the 100m Backstroke. He also broke the open 100m and
200m Individual Medley school records.
Cole Phillips won a silver medal in the 15 year old 50m Freestyle in a new
school record time of 24.09, This school record has been broken no less than 5
times this year by both Cole and Alex Odom. Cole also gained a number of other
top 10 placings.
Ian Tsui, Josh Carroll, Alex Willis, Ryan Stott and Levi Holman all also gained
top ten placings in individual events.
The 15 and under relay teams performed with distinction. The A team of Alex
Willis, Alex Odom, Cole Phillips and Ian Tsui won Gold the 4x 50m medley relay
and in the 4x 50m free relay by comprehensive margins. They were narrowly
beaten into the Silver medal in the 4x100m free relay. The B team finished 4th
in the 4x100m Free relay, 7th in the 4x50m Free relay and 8th
in the 4x50m Medley relay, beating some top swimming schools A teams in the
process.
Overall the team finished a clear 2nd on boy’s points. This is an
amazing achievement given the relatively small size of our team. They finished 3rd
overall in the boy’s relay points.
