2nd XI Cricket Reports

PNBHS 2nd XI vs Freyberg CC – 31 October 2021
Ongley Park – Artificial 2 – P2 T20

Another toss won and again we opted to bat first. With the plan being to play fearless cricket and take on the opposition bowlers if the opportunity presented itself, Van Prenter and Jerome Robinson started out positively yet carefully. After 6 overs we had advanced to 35 without loss, one of the targets we had set ourselves. The best part was that, while several aggressive shots were played, very few rash shots were played and thus very few chances taken. As the innings progressed both Van and Jerome grew in confidence and continued to up the scoring rate until Jerome was first batsman out in the 17th over with the score on 133. He ended up with fantastic 63 runs off 53 balls. With targets continually being adjusted as the onslaught continued, we were striving for 160 where the initial goal was to score more than 120. However, Van followed 11 runs later for a very well played, out-of-his-comfort-zone, innings of 63 off 60 balls. Thanks to these two great knocks, we ended on 147/3 in our 20 overs.

Freyberg started their innings aggressively scoring 8 in the first 4 overs, keeping up with the required run-rate. However, regular wickets kept pegging the run rate back and creating more pressure for their middle and lower order. Our fielding display was top notch, backing the bowlers up in the very difficult gale-force wind conditions. Rian Lyver with 3 good catches, was joined by Ethan Campbell, Ethan Robinson and Jerome Robinson who all took difficult chances. This, together with 3 run outs ensured that Freyberg were always behind the required rate.

Ethan Campbell (3 for 38 in 4 overs), Ehsan Muhammad (3 for 31 in 4 overs) and Ethan Campbell (1 for 11 in 4 overs) were the wicket takers while Riveen Samarasekara and Angus Stuart bowled economically in their overs.
Freyberg were bowled out for 124 with 2 balls to spare giving us a fantastic win by 23 runs. The boys can feel extremely proud of this win against one of the leading sides in the Premier 2 league. The aggressive and positive brand of cricket is exciting to watch and the boys are growing in confidence with each game. Well played 2nd XI!

Result: PNBHS won by 23 runs.
