Congratulations to Year 13 student Lucas Richardson, who is one of 15 young people nationally to be selected for the upcoming BLAKE Expedition to the Southern Ocean & Sub-Antarctic Islands from the 13-22nd of March, onboard the HMNZS Canterbury.
The BLAKE Expedition will include collecting and analysing peat core sediments on Campbell Island to understand how climate has changed in the past. The work will also include kelp and intertidal marine ecological monitoring, and plankton sampling to understand long-term patterns and processes of Sub-Antarctic ecosystems.”
The 2022 BLAKE Expedition to the Auckland and Campbell Islands will be the programme’s fifth voyage and the third to the Sub-Antarctic, in partnership with the Royal New Zealand Navy, Department of Conservation, Ministry for the Environment, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Social Development, NIWA and Westpac.
In 2021 Lucas applied for and was selected to be part of the BLAKE Inspire environmental leadership programme, a week long experience in which he was exposed to a wide range of hands-on practical work and engaging presentations.
