The Manawatū-Horowhenua Secondary Schools Regional Kī O Rahi Tournament was held last Friday, proudly hosted once again by Tai Wānanga Tū Toa. This year’s event saw strong participation, with 22 teams competing from across the region.

Two combined teams from Palmerston North Boys' High School and Palmerston North Girls' High School entered, while the third was a standalone team from Palmerston North Boys' High School. Preparation for the tournament began in August, with players training twice a week through to October. The primary focus during training was to develop a strong team culture between the two schools and to uphold the values of the kaupapa.

For many of the players, this was their first experience playing Kī o Rahi. Training sessions emphasised learning the rules of the game and building a solid understanding of its foundations. The tournament showcased a high level of competition, with several teams demonstrating great skill and sportsmanship.

Congratulations to Dannevirke High School, Tai Wānanga Tū Toa, St Peter’s College, and Te Wharekura o Manawatū, who have qualified to represent the Manawatū-Horowhenua region at the Secondary Schools National Kī o Rahi Tournament, to be held in the Hutt Valley next year.

A special congratulations also goes to the combined Palmerston North Boys' High School and Palmerston North Girls' High School Development Team, who won the Development Grade, an excellent achievement reflecting their hard work and commitment.

A special thank you to Matua Chris Swannell for his invaluable guidance throughout the season, and to Sport Manawatū for their continued support in making this event possible.
