PNBHS 1st XI Cricket VS Rathkeale College 14/03/19

Vying for a place in the Central Districts Gillette Cup Qualifying finals, the PNBHS 1st XI travelled to Rathkeale in search of a win. Jack Wenham won the toss and chose to bat first on a wicket which looked a fair one. A solid opening stand was followed by a 2nd wicket partnership of similar ilk, allowing Ruben Love to join Curtis Heaphy at the crease with the team on 96 in the 25th over. Heaphy was happy to feed the strike to Love and watch from the other end as Ruben put on a masterclass on how to dismantle an attack. He walloped 6 fours and 6 sixes to score 86 off 51 balls. With his departure, Curtis took over and made 77 at almost a-run-a-ball. The middle and lower order all kept up the tempo and the 1st XI finished on an impressive 307 for 8 from their allotted 50 overs. Jack Wenham contributed 21, Henry Deans 33 and Levi Woolston 46.

Defending a forbidding total, the Boys’ High opening bowlers struggled to find their marks and it wasn’t until the introduction of Levi Woolston that a breakthrough was made. As is often the case, one wicket brought 2 and more. A 7th wicket stand from the opposition stalled the 1st XI’s march to victory and it wasn’t till the reintroduction of the openers that PNBHS were able to mop up the tail and dismiss them for 179 in the 48th over. Thomas Kirk took 2 for 26 but it was Levi Woolston (having a particularly good day) who was the most impressive, finishing with figures of 10 overs, 6 maidens, 5 for 10.

A win to the 1st XI by 128 runs. This sees them advancing to the CD Quad on 20 and 21 March.
