1st XV v St Patrick's College Silverstream

The 1st XV travelled to play St Pats Silverstream for the Wallace Cup on Wednesday 26 June. The field and weather conditions were superb and both teams were looking to play competitive rugby.

The game started well for the 1st XV with an attack surging up the field. Placed under pressure, the home team gave up a penalty and we started the scoring action.

Silverstream replied with an unconverted try before we struck back again with another penalty to take a one point lead midway through the first half. Play tended to be played between the 22’s with both teams earning turnovers through a mixture of good defence, poor carry heights and handling errors. As the half closed, we managed to string some phases together and scored a try to take an 11-5 lead into the oranges.

The second half started well for the home side as they placed us under pressure and scored a try to narrow the gap. Again, we struggled to string phases together as we turned the ball over with high carries and this allowed Stream to enjoy a wealth of possession. Our tackles, however, were sticking and we controlled territory with a strong kicking game. This turned into points with a converted try and a penalty and with time winding down we were 21-10 up.

Stream scored a last minute try to close the gap but with the final whistle, the victory was ours as was the Wallace Cup.
