Thursday, 15 April saw the conclusion of the Wellington Senior Secondary Schools' Water Polo Competition.
The first game saw the Junior A team play St Patrick’s Silverstream for 5th and 6th. The Junior A team were very much outmatched in terms of size, against a much older side. Compounding this was the fact that the team had no subs. Despite the obstacles, the team really stood up and dominated the game. A 4 nil first quarter set the tone for the game. The Junior A team were quite simply outstanding on defence, and were created good chances with good movement on offence. The final score was a 9-2 victory.
Goal scorers Charlie Hook 3, Caleb Woisin and Jack Aitken-Cade 2 each, Callum Simpson and Ethan Limmer 1 each.
The Senior A team played Rongotai College in the final. The teams traded goals for the first quarter, with neither team gaining dominance for long. Jayden Nicholson was very effective on attack scoring 3 goals in the quarter, 4 all was a good reflection of the closeness of the game. In the 2nd quarter the Senior A tightened up on defence, making some good field blocks. This allowed the team to take a slender 7-6 lead into the halftime break. Neither team could establish dominance in the 3rd quarter. When Eugene Stassen score with 6 seconds left it saw the Senior A team lead 9-7. The 4th quarter saw Josh Hughes show his absolute class at both ends of the pool. He scored three times in the space of three minutes and made multiple critical plays on defence. The Senior A team did wobble a little in the last two minutes letting in two goals in quick succession, but the lead was large enough. Final score a 12-10 win.
Goal scorers Josh Hughes and Jayden Nicholson 4 each, Quinlan Huff 2, Connor McKay, and Eugene Stassen 1 each.
