Feeling Safe Survey
de Gerry Atkin - Tuesday, 9 de September de 2025, 07:50

All students deserve the right to feel safe in their school environment and at Palmerston North Boys’ High School we work hard to provide a positive experience for our young men. As such, bullying and other antisocial behaviour is unacceptable.  However, we are aware that it does occur within groups of people and unfortunately can be an issue for students in secondary schools.  Our fundamental school rules are very clear that bullying will not be tolerated.  When issues are brought to our attention, we do our utmost to deal with them.

However, in order for us to have effective systems in place it is important that we have a good understanding of the nature of any bullying issues at school.  To obtain this data we would like you to complete an anonymous survey:

Bagpipes
de Gerry Atkin - Friday, 5 de September de 2025, 12:18

It’s fantastic to see the bagpipes experiencing a renaissance at PNBHS.  Earlier this week, four of our novice pipers, Tuki Walker, Oliver Smillie, Lucas Lynch and Sam Smith, had their first session on the bagpipes, having graduated from the chanter.

We are incredibly fortunate to have the services of bagpipe tutor Mr Stuart Easton in our itinerant music staff.  Mr Easton is a world-class piper and six times overall New Zealand solo piping Champion. He has been a winner of the Highland Society of London Gold Medal at the Argyllshire Gathering, the Northern Meeting Silver Medal at Inverness, and recently won the Piobaireachd competition at the 54th annual Festival Interceltique de Lorient, the annual solo piping competition.

Lucas Lynch, third from left in the photograph, is playing a set of pipes belonging to Head of Music Mr Young's family, that Mr Easton has restored.

Fortress 40 is a 40-hour endurance challenge designed to push participants to their physical and mental limits, in support of men's mental health awareness. The event is run in conjunction with the Movember Foundation, a leading charity dedicated to tackling men's mental health issues, as well as several other Super Eight schools.

During Fortress 40, a group of Prefects will embark on a challenging journey, engaging in intense training activities. Some of these activities will be open to all students, allowing them to support and make a difference. Through this gruelling experience, our team aims to highlight the importance of mental resilience and well-being, especially among young men.

By coming together and pushing our limits, we can shed light on the challenges faced by men and encourage open discussions about mental health.

We would be extremely grateful to have the support of the Palmy Boys’ community for this event. Your involvement would support the movement for men's mental health and provide a unique opportunity for students to challenge themselves and make a positive difference in their community.

Information about opportunities to get involved will be provided to students in the coming days. You can support our fundraising for the Movember Foundation by purchasing a raffle ticket or making a donation directly to the Movember Foundation https://nz.movember.com/mospace/15363405 (the Movember Foundation is a registered charity).

Prominent on the PNBHS Fortress 40 crest is the Castle from our school crest. The Castle represents strength; physical strength, mental strength and strength of character. Our strength comes from our dedication, our determination and the resilience we develop through our willingness to take on challenges and striving to do our best when faced with adversity. Another measure of strength is our willingness to ask for help and support from others when we need it and that’s OK. Strength also comes from the way we look out for our brothers by offering help and support.
