SVA Award
โดย Gerry Atkin - Monday, 17 March 2025, 1:16PM

Congratulations to Zakariya Barzak who was presented with the SVA (Student Volunteer Army) Pounamu Award at assembly this morning.

The SVA Service Award is a nationally recognised framework that acknowledges the formal volunteering efforts of secondary school students. Through a five-level badge system, it celebrates the diverse acts of service students perform within their community, whānau, or school. Students log their hours in the SVA and build a Summary of Service to support scholarships, leadership opportunities, tertiary education, or employment applications.

Since its inception in 2019, the SVA Service Award has seen tens of thousands of students sign up and log over 2 million hours of volunteering. Today, we are here to celebrate Zakariya Barzak, who in 2024 received an SVA Pounamu Award, a special recognition of his commitment to volunteering and outstanding contributions in 2024 that have made a significant impact.

Global Youth Summer Camp 2025
โดย Gerry Atkin - Sunday, 16 March 2025, 12:47PM

“To strengthen global youth connections and build on the 32-year sister city relationship between Palmerston North and Guiyang, the Guiyang Municipal Government is excited to invite 14-18 year old students from Palmerston North to participate in the Global Youth Summer Camp in Guiyang in June/July 2025. This programme will bring together 20 students from Palmerston North and 20 students from Guiyang No. 6 High School, fostering cross-cultural friendships and mutual learning.”

“Guiyang and Palmerston North have been sister cities since 1992. Massey University and Guizhou University have collaborated for over 35 years, focusing on environmental and agricultural projects. In 2017, Mayor Grant Smith led a delegation to Guiyang to mark the 25th anniversary of our relationship and enhance economic and educational ties. Universal College of Learning (UCOL) has MOUs with Guiyang Vocational and Technical Training College, Guiyang Nursing Vocational Training College, Guiyang University, and launched a scholarship programme with the Palmerston North City Council to attract students to study in Palmerston North.
International education has greatly benefitted both cities, enhancing our global profiles and contributing to cultural and economic development. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the sector but also provided an opportunity to strengthen and rethink our educational collaborations.

Palmerston North City Council and Guiyang Municipal Government are interested in establishing a sustainable education abroad programme for Palmerston North and Guiyang youth to enjoy. The partnership aims to enhance international education, improve student mobility, foster connections, and showcase Guiyang to globally minded Palmerston North youth. A mutually beneficial long-term relationship could be cultivated between our respective local governments, communities, and cities/regions at large.”

WINTER SPORT REGISTRATIONS
โดย Gerry Atkin - Friday, 14 March 2025, 4:11PM

Registrations are now OPEN for many of our winter sporting codes.  In 2024 333 young men played Basketball, 221 played Football, 120 played Hockey, 390 played Rugby, 36 played Squash and 100 played Table Tennis.  With these numbers involved there is a significant amount of organisation and administration that is required.  Having an accurate idea of player numbers is essential so that we can ensure we have enough coaches and managers for our teams.  Consequently, if your son is keen to play winter sport we encourage you to complete the registration process as soon as possible.

CNI Debating
โดย Gerry Atkin - Friday, 14 March 2025, 1:06PM

On Sunday the 4th of March six junior teams and two senior teams competed in the annual Central North Island Regional Debating Competition. This year saw the largest number of attendees from schools in the central districts in more than ten years. Schools from New Plymouth, Palmerston North and Whanganui all crammed into Whanganui Collegiate for the competition. Students debated topics such as: fining parents for a child’s low school attendance, banning professional and amateur sports that have a high rate of head injury, giving parents full access to their child’s social media accounts, and whether amnesty should be given to dictators who choose to step down from power.

After three fierce rounds of debating, and three consecutive victories, PNBHS was named as one of two schools who would soon battle it out for first place. The opposition was New Plymouth Boys’ High School. The motion would be that “this house would provide amnesty for dictators who choose to step down from power.” PNBHS was on the affirming side, and the team employed textbook strategies to convince the adjudicator of their position. Oliver Song, as first speaker, provided the New Plymouth side with a win condition that proved cumbersome. That being, “you must prove that your side of the house provides more benefit to the people in countries run by dictators”. Aside from criminal justice, New Plymouth were unable to provide the adjudicator with any real benefits to opposing the motion. Simon Ton, as second speaker, continued to reinforce the benefits of providing a system where dictatorships could be broken down, and replaced by democratic societies by allowing them amnesty in return for giving up power. During the negating second speech, Simon Ton provided a match-winning point of interest, presenting New Plymouth with the question, “how do you think people are going to feel as soon as the current dictator is replaced by another, instead of replaced by a democratic society?”. This point of interest was left unanswered by New Plymouth and provided a convincing case for PNBHS. Isaac Fox presented a world-class third-speaker speech that left no doubt in the adjudicator’s minds as to who the victor of this debate should be. This debate was a strong display of teamwork, and each member played a pivotal role in the victory.

Congratulations to all students who participated in this long and thrilling day. Four debates across ten hours is an incredible feat, with the best team winning. Oliver Song and Tyler Thompson have made selections for the regional team and will go on to represent the central districts at the national competition at parliament in May. We wish Oliver and Tyler all the best for the next stage of the competition.

Jacob Lean
โดย Gerry Atkin - Friday, 14 March 2025, 1:05PM

Congratulations to Jacob Lean who was named Athlete of the Meet at yesterday’s PNBHS Athletics Championships and was presented with the trophy and medal.  The Athlete of the Meet title is determined by points on an international ranking system which are awarded for performances in individual events.  For the first time ever, this award was a three-way tie and needed to be determined by considering the athletes' performances in the other events they contested.  Jacob was also presented with the Rector’s Cup, which is awarded to the young man who has earned the most points for their club at the PNBHS Athletics Championships.  Jacob was first in the Open 10,000m, first in the Senior 5,000m, first in the Senior 3,000m and first in the Senior 1,500m – an outstanding achievement.
