Marae Visit
by Gerry Atkin - Thursday, 9 May 2024, 2:24 PM

On Tuesday 7th May, the year 12 and 13 students studying Te Reo Māori visited Te Kupenga o Te Mātauranga at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa to learn about the different kōwhaiwhai (traditional Māori patterns) done by ex-students who graduated from the old teachers' college, Massey University that was once situated down Centennial Drive.

The purpose of the visit was for the students to gain new ideas and inspiration from the kōwhaiwhai and to incorporate their own stories around identity or their interests through the language of kōwhaiwhai. Kōwhaiwhai is a language known to Māori that symbolises a person's journey, to signify growth to name a few.

We would like to acknowledge Haami Hawkins (Pou Ārahi Mātauranga) for sharing your knowledge of the history of Te Kupenga o Te Mātauranga and welcoming our students in. Thank you to Gary Butler and his team for arranging the visit and for their hospitality.

Ko te tohu o te rangatira, he manaaki
Ko te tohu o te mātauranga, he māramatanga.
Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, e kore rawa ngā mihi e pakoko

Dance Success
by Gerry Atkin - Thursday, 9 May 2024, 10:48 AM

Dharnel Tamati-Fotualii, Liam Qiokata and Lenny Hansen-Wall have been successful as part of Anomaly Dance Studio groups and have qualified for upcoming international competitions.

All three are part of the 10-person group Scar. They competed in the Battlegrounds competition in Hamilton in March where they finished third and qualified to compete in the World Supremacy Battleground in Sydney in June. Scar won the New Zealand Only category at the HHI (Hip Hop International) competition in Auckland during the April school holidays and was first at the recent Kapiti Impact Dance competition.

Dharnel and Liam are also part of the Roar megacrew – a group of about 35 dancers – that won their category in the Battlegrounds competition in Hamilton, as well as being the highest-scoring group across all categories. This result qualified Roar to compete in the World Supremacy Battleground in Sydney in June. Roar were also the winners of their category at HHI (Hip Hop International) in Auckland, a result that sees them qualify for the World HHI competition in Arizona and August.

Congratulations and good luck to Dharnel, Liam and Lenny – it’s great to see your hard work and dedication rewarded!

Wellbeing Survey
by Gerry Atkin - Wednesday, 8 May 2024, 10:27 AM

Dear Young Men,
Re: Wellbeing at School

Young people’s wellbeing has been a significant topic in society in general and education in particular for the last decade.  We are involved in a research project through the International Boys’ Schools Coalition (IBSC) and require your help.

The link below is to a survey that we need ALL young men to complete.

 https://unsw.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6R3ooQ2ZTc3R9RA

This survey, coordinated by Professor Andrew Martin of the Educational Psychology Group at the University of New South Wales, is being completed by boys at boys’ schools across the globe.  The information from this survey will be used to help develop strategies and resources for schools to use to support the wellbeing of young men.  As such we believe that it is an important project for us to support and contribute to.

We would appreciate it if you could please ensure you complete the survey before Friday, May 10.  It will take approximately 20 minutes and needs to be completed in one session.

Thank you for your assistance.
Yours faithfully,

D M Bovey
